News Ahead of Monaghan United Game

Shelbourne v Monaghan United

Shelbourne open their campaign in the Airtricity League First Division at home to Monaghan United in Tolka Park on Friday night, with an 8pm kick-off

With just seven players from last year’s panel still on the books at Tolka, the match squad for the game will contain many faces new to the Shelbourne faithful. Steve Williams returns to the Reds as back-up to keeper Delany while in defence Sean Byrne (Bohemians), Ian Ryan (Drogheda Utd), Gareth Whelan (Sporting Fingal) and Michael Clarke (Drogheda Utd) join Stephen Quigley and Kevin Doherty from last season.

Existing Shelbourne midfielders David Cassidy, David McGill, Ray Scully and Colin O’Brien are joined by Robbie Clarke and Paul Shiels (both Drogheda Utd), Eric Foley (Sporting Fingal) and Jack Flynn (St.Patrick’s Ath)

A completely new forward department is made up of Marc Hughes (Bohemians-loan), Darren Forsyth (Gateshead), Andy Haran (St.Patrick’s Ath – loan), Philly Gorman (Kildare County) and Dinny Corcoran (Sporting Fingal – loan).

Pre-season was satisfactory with wins against Drogheda United and a PFAI Selection and narrow losses to Premier Division side Shamrock Rovers (0-1), Bohemians (0-2) and Dundalk (0-1). Shelbourne then defeated a strong Tolka Rovers side by two goals to nil in the Leinster Senior Cup – First Round, on Sunday last.

Manager Dermot Keely is quietly optimistic and, despite he fact that the First Division is expected to be the closest in years, feels that he has a side that, with a bit of luck, can go one better than the past two seasons and claim the top position in the league, come the end of October.
