Shelbourne v Limerick
This Friday sees Shelbourne host Limerick FC at Tolka Park. Kick-off is scheduled for 8pm.
After a loss at home to Derry City in his first game in charge of the Reds, Alan Mathews took his charges to Galway, last Saturday to face Mervue United in Terryland Park.
In a hard fought encounter, Shels striker Philip Gorman got his well deserved goal. When Daivd Cassidy floated across his 75th minute free kick, Gorman rose the highest to place his header away from all of the defenders into the bottom left corner of the Mervue goal.
That wasn't an end to the nights drama though, when five minutes from time, Sean Byrne challenged for the ball after a Mervue goal kick and was adjudged to be the offender. After the ensuing exchange of views between the Shels players, their Mervue counterparts and the officials, referee Sean Grimes consulted with his 4th Official. After a brief discussion, Mr. Grimes beconed Shels defender Ian Ryan towards him, much to the annoyance of the home fans, Upon hearing the protests, Mr. Grimes consulted his 4th Official once more, and showed Ryan a straight red card. This time the visiting contingent, both on and off the field, were the unhappy parties.
After a few scary minutes for the Reds, where it once appeared as though Mervue had nabbed an equaliser, the referee blew his whistle, give Shels 3 points and a good boost going into the next three games, were they face 3 fellow promotion challengers, starting with Limerick.
Going into this game, Shels have Gareth Whelan back from suspension this week.
Sean Byrne misses this one through suspension, after the red card that had been shown to Ian Ryan was rescinded and issued to Byrne.
With regards to injuries, the Reds have a relatively clean bill of health. Eric Foley, who has been suffering with a hamstring injury for the last few weeks, is well on the road to recovery.
