Shelbourne 1, Millwall 1

Friendly game in Tolka ends all square -

Shelbourne 1 : 1 Millwall

In the first of three friendly games, the spoils were divided equally with the Real Reds and the Lions sharing two goals. This was a fairly competitive games for a friendly and a number warnings could have been dished out by referee Dave McKeon.

In fielding two completely different teams in each half, Millwall Manager Kenny Jackett, gave his three summer signings David Forde, Jimmy Adbou and Ashely Grimes a first run and also included trailist on tour Charlie Daniels.

Franco Georgescu renewed acquaintances with David Forde (ex Derry City) when he had the ball in the back of his net after only a couple of minutes, when he finished off a Bisto Flood knock down. His effort was however, ruled offside by the linesman.

James Chambers was close on seven minutes with a free kick and Alan Keely was just wide with Shels first corner shortly after.

A crunching tackle by Millwall’s Dublin born Alan Dunne on newly signed, on loan from Bray Wanderers, Gary McCabe, went unpunished by McKeon. The tackle left the Shelbourne players lying injured on the ground and had to be helped from the field after only 16 minuttes and now looks doubtful for Friday’s game with Dundalk.

A mistake by Laird let in Anto Flood on 35 minutes, but he scuffed his shop and it was easily collected by Forde. Within a minute of that miss Millwall were ahead. Following a quick break, Dave Martin crossed the ball from the left and Neil Harris made no mistake, his headed goal leaving the visitors a goal ahead at the break.

Shelbourne’s keeper, Vinny Whelan, did well just after the break to hold efforts from both Ashley Grimes and Gary Alexander. Shortly after the 65th minute, Shels’ sub keeper Fred Davis jnr made a terrific save, stopping a perfectly placed header from Alexander, at the base of the post.

Both side had good chances, David McGill spurning a good chance from Freeman’s delivery and at the other end, Ashley Grimes pulling his shot, from a good position, wide.

Shelbourne were level after 78 minutes, when Lions’ keeper Preston Edwards failed to hold a Peter McGlynn free kick from 21 yards and the spilled ball was thumped to the net by Franco Georgesco. Shelbourne, pressing for the winner, saw a good chance by McGlynn saved by Edwards, who then moments later got his fist to a snap-shot from Flood to put it out for a corner.

Davis tipped an Ali Fuseini shot over the bar just before Edwards had to pull out a reflex save to deny Georgescu an injury time winner.
